We wondered how much things have changed since, knowing we are having a 2020 Vision, Wan M'sia concept and so on and so fourth.

But all we can conclude at the end of the day, was a Vision of sadness, anger, pity and sorrowness...

I shall divide my sharing into 2 parts - Positive & Negative:

Positive

The sole positive part of our trip was that we were able to have a Gathering as usual, and that it's been at least 20 years since any one of us have been to this Zoological Garden. And the only good part of the animals was the young Seal, which was really cute, especially the way it clapped its hands! :)

Negative

There is nothing more I can say positively, and so, here we go with the sadness, anger, pity and sorrowness of what we experienced...

1. Zoo Map
Last month Persis and I had a short trip to Singapore and one of the places we visited was Singapore Zoo. We paid RM18 (as it was the Promotion month for M'sian residents only)(usually $18) and we got the Map, brochures, and the entire Zoo was an Excellent Journey through the animal kingdom! No complaints what-so-ever. The only extra things we paid for were for drinks or ice-cream(Ben & Jerry's) at the stalls located inside the Zoo.

In Zoo Negara, we paid RM 15 (as stated in it's website). But at the counter, IF we wanted to also go into the Insect & Butterfly area, we had to pay an additional RM 5! WTF?!?!?

And NO Map was given. And the highlight was that when we went to get a Map, it costs RM 2!!! For THIS Cheap, Crappy Low Quality and Low Info Map:

2. Trash Bin
These are important tools which are located all over the Zoo, for visitors to dispose of their rubbish. Unfortunately, the state of these Trash Bins is so bad, it should be Disposed of itself!!! In fact, there was a logo of Colonel Sanders (KFC) on the back of the trash bins, meaning this bins have been here for donkey years!

3. Disgusting sights
The name says it all. Here we saw a large tree trunk which it's tree was cut down, leaving it looking baren and all. Why cut down trees IN the Zoo? We also see the roads which have drops of paint, and it looks dirty and the walls where they built a waterfall was full of algae and unsightful:

4. Multi-Animals Show (Location)
This was one of the shows we were looking forward too. The signs outside looked bad:

There were many Holes on the netted ceiling and a lot of dry leaves were falling down from it.

Behind us was the Aquarium which had Patins, and Arapaimas, but the enclosure looks real run down!

5. Multi-Animals Show - Bird show - Money Extortion!!!
This was by far the most Shocking part of the show!!!

The animal was a Bird (forgot it's breed), and it's speciality was to fly onto an arm of a person (the person's arm must be stretched out relatively high, while holding a Money note in his hand), walk towards his hand and grab the money with it's mouth and fly back to it's trainer. Here's the terrible truth,

When a man held out his hand with a RM 1 note:

the Bird DID NOT move. so the emcee asked him to bring out a larger amount, and the man took out a RM 10 note. The Bird DID MOVE and flew to his arm and did the following:

The emcee proceeded to ask more people who would like to "see the bird perform it's trick", when in fact the damn bird was extorting money on behalf of his trainer or whoever it is in cooperation with!!! In more clearer fashion, This was the Longest performance of the show! Sheesh!

6. House of Steel
Just outside the Show arena, there were the Monkeys enclosure. It consisted of Steel Cages, which looked worse than the Sungai Buloh Prison!!!

More so, the 'home' of these monkeys inside the cage were not even close to their natural habitats. much concrete and steel instead.

7. Hippo's sorrow
The gigantic Hippopotamus was the next victim, as their enclosure were even more concrete, it's like a giant wide concrete bowl with water filled up for them to soak in, and they were in it most of the time. But the enclosure was small for an animal that big!

8. Orang Utan's new toy
The Orang Utan area looked quite spacious, as there were only 3 of them (2 young ones and a really old one). The old one was just sitting around, one young one was resting on a platform, and I noticed the other young one climbing around, moving closer to us. As it came closer, I saw it holding on and playing with a Junk Food Wrapper!!!

It was stated "Cheese Balls" on the wrapper! This endangered species can become Further endangered should they eat that plastic! I mean, first thing that came to my mind was, what the heck is that plastic wrapper doing there?!?!?

Who was that irresponsible prick who threw it in?!?!?
What was that prick thinking?!?!?
Why didn't the Zoo Trainers/Staff remove it?!?!?

9. King of the Jungle @ Slave of the Concrete Jungle
Everyone loves the King of the Jungle, but we pity this King and his Queen. Here is the enclosure for the mighty Lions. They were just resting all the time on the platform, looking forlorn and sad. And just take a look at its 'house'. More concrete than anything! So much for creating habitats of the animals as natural as possible...Damn!

10. "Door Stopper"
There is a lake in the Zoo where there are many Birds (Flamingos etc) which are placed there. As we were walking back towards the exit, we noticed the Gate that drains water out of the Lake. We saw a Dead Fish stuck at the door entrance! And it smelled bad! We don't know if it got stuck as it was washed out or someone placed it there as a 'door stopper'.

11. Icing on the Cake
To top our first visit to our National Zoo in 20 years, we stopped by the Elephants area before exiting the Zoo. It was feeding time, and we see many people extending their hands to feed the Elephant. Firstly, I feel the distance between extending our hands and for the Elephant to grab the food is a little to far. I was afraid the elephant might have lost it's control and fell into the concrete drain below!

Look into its eyes and you could see and feel it's sadness all over.......

And finally, there were 2 Elephants. The other one was in his den. I wondered why he did not move. And then I saw that his Legs were Tied Up with Metal Chains!!! Then what is the use of putting them in the Zoo? If he was injured or something, shouldn't they have a private area for these animals? The poor giant had no place to move, and I did not see any Water within it's reach!

Final words...

We are always promoting "Visit Malaysia". We are always promoting our country's holiday spots and places to visit. We are always encouraging Malaysians to Support our own country and to know that we too have world class (konon-nya) tourist attractions. We were all lookin forward to this Zoo trip, sort of like a trip down memory lane, but in the end, our we felt like erasing even the memoried from our first trip 20 years ago!

We tried to be positive and not take into the negative comments which were written in the Newspapers and online forums etc. But we came out, and we are now contributing to Support those who had given such comments!

NO to animal abuse!
Our National Zoo is a disgrace!

*The comments on this blog are of my personal feelings and thoughts. I remember I woke up to an SMS from my wife at 8am! (I was on Business Trip in Penang). Right after I read the SMS, I turned on the BBC Channel on my hotel room. And there it was, the continuous Live News Coverage of the Death of the King of Pop.

Shocked as I was, I was just silent throughout the entire morning. Whether you are, were or even if you weren't a fan, you knew who this person was. My grandfather knows him, so does the youngest cousin of mine. No Death of a Celebrity had such hightened popularity and publicity since Princess Diana. Being humans that we are, at the final years of his life, things were going down, many looked down at a man, fallen from grace, with accusations here and there. But the moment he passed, everything changed to respected comments and praise for a man, who's dream, achievements and personality matched no other. Thus those who thought of him otherwise when he was alive, would now feel the sorrow, guilt, and sadness.

I'll skip the rest, as almost everyone else in the world had provided their touching and memorable comments. I would like to share my feelings of the Final Chapter in Michael's Life which was official with the Michael Jackson Memorial Service, Live from the Staples Centre in LA @ 1am-3.30am (Malaysian time)

As expected, it was a true touching event, an event where cheers and rejoicing sounds were expected to be heard, but in fact, as the 11,000 strong crowd filled up the arena, the only sound was Silence...

There were no emcees, the performers just came on stage when their turn came, one speech, one song, and so on. One of the most heartwarming and strong message that was presented was by Reverand Al Sharpton which automatically got an entire standing ovation! He was addressing Michael's children:

"There wasn't nothing strange about your daddy, it was strange what your daddy had to deal with, but he dealth with it!"

A good friend of Michael's, Brooke Shields also shared that his favourite song was not one of his master pieces, rather, it was a song by Charlie Chaplin back in 1928 called "Smile". Right after her speech, Michael's brother, Jermaine Jackson took the stage and sang that very song:

His performance was one of my favourite. So touching and sincere it was. He had to hold back his tears, and after his performance, he threw a rose on Michael's casket.

There were many other Stars who sang tributes, all were excellent songs! Even the young kid, Shaheen Jafargholi, who rose to fame on the Britain's Got Talent show, by singing the same song that made him famous, which was the Jackson 5's "Who's Lovin You". Michael even invited him to sing with him at the upcoming 50 Concerts which will now never be held.

The final part of the Memorial was a few speeches by a few of Michael's brothers, one who was reduced to tears as he ended his thank you speech. The last speech was by Paris Michael, Michael's one and only daughter. She was already sobbing as she took the mic:

It was a heartfelt tribute to her father, whom she will miss for the rest of her life.

Tears, passion, sadness, smiles, rejoicing, remembering, respecting, honouring & loving...

These had been the feelings of people all over the world. We can now finally give Michael his well deserved rest, as he places himself now next to the Lord.

"Heal The World, Make It A Better Place, For You And For Me, And The Entire Human Race, There Are People Dying, If You Care Enough For The Living, Make A Better Place For You And For Me"

This animal famous around the world as being pets, and many other kinds of roles, but here in Malaysia, the extremely touching story of the Pulau Ketam Dog Rescue Mission tops it all, if there ever was a story involving dogs! Heck, there could even be a movie based on this true story!

The moment these furry 4-legged friends of ours were to look into our eyes, it feels as though nothing else in the world matters, it feels as though the beauty of innocence had just been glared into our hearts, THIS is real magic!

The next thing we know, we are uncontrollably handing whatever food or crumbs we have in our hands to their mouths! And after gobbling down the food, they continue to lick our hands and fingers clean!

I am talking about dogs...

The recent Horrific news about dogs being abandoned at an isolated HELL island near Pulau Ketam left us all stunned! We wondered how can a Human do such things? More so, we heard people were paid per dog that is thrown there! There is no food on that island, there are many poisonous snakes, and many dogs who could not make it, died a terrible death. And for the remaining ones, they ate the carcasses of the dead dogs to survive.

The pertinent question is: "Who are the REAL Beasts?" The Humans who discarded these dogs, and let them die on that island? Or the dogs, who knew nothing of their fate, and was handed down their Death Judgement!

If that is what being a Human is, I'd rather be a Dog!

This is Kuning and Hitam. They are the REAL Heroes! They knew what the rescue team was doing, and they would jump into the sea near the island and they would go into the island, and bring out surviving dogs! Hitam even grabbed Fish from his home at the fish farm kelong, into his mouth, and swam to the island and gave that as food for the surviving dogs!

Kuning is like so much more efficient than a Baywatch lifeguard! Recently he went missing, 2 volunteers thought he was one of the abandoned dogs and took him home. Recently he was re-united with his owners at the kelong, who were Indonesian workers there. And he's now back to work! haa.

This is the platform created by the volunteers, and Kuning would bring out the surviving dogs onto this platform. Water and food are placed there so that the surviving ones can still have food and water.

The first picture above is of Kuning and his owner Adi, the Indonesian worker at the fish farm kelong.

The rescue was headed by Ms Sabrina Yeap, who deserves more recognition than any human I currently know! She is the founder of the FFF - Furry Friends Farm, located in Kundang. Many Volunteers from the country came up and offered their help, and together they formed a team, a strong team that leaves even the Superstar athletes in shame (Ronaldo's 80 million pounds?!?!?)

The dogs are brought to a vet before begin taken to this farm, where they would be properly cared for.

I am inspired to write about this topic as I know, there are still many good hearted humans in this world. Even Volunteers as far as Australia came to help! The most recent one in the previous few years was Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. As a fan of Star Wars, I was blown away by the enhanced Digital effects and especially the final Lightsaber Duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan! And of course, the transformation to Darth Vader, which is what everybody had looked forward too since the announcement of Episode I. Now, we have a sequel to every adult of this generation's childhood dreams, to have a live movie version of Transformers! 2 years ago, Michael bay created this miracle. I mean, when I saw the Peterbilt Truck drive up towards Sam & Mikaela, and as it transformed into Optimus Prime, I shed a tear...That was the intro of the movie, a whole new standard created, especially in the Action movie arena!

Then 2 years later, present day to be exact, we now have the sequel to that childhood dream, with expextations of even more Robots to be added into the movie.

Michael bay was tight-lipped about the actual premise of the movie, as he released little informations bit by bit, giving us all fans an even higher degree of Eagerness and "I-Can't-Wait-To-See-It-Kill-Me-Man!"

The title:

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

The trailer itself was mind boggling! It was quite brilliant of Michael to bring alive the Character of The Fallen. In the original storyline, The Fallen never appeared in any of the animated Transformer cartoons. The only time it appeared was in one of the Comic Books, and ONE toy (if i''m not mistakened) was only produced back then. The original version states The Fallen was one of the Original Transformers, much like the Transformer Gods. Anyway, in this story, it is slightly different, but cool nontheless!

Apart from Optimus, everyone's Favourite, we have more Autobots, which include the Twins, which were quite humerous!

Megatron came back (how can we have a Transformers movie without him & Starscream right?)

He was altered slightly. Compared to the cartoons, it is a more realistic approach on how they brought him back to life. They dismantled one of their Decepticon robots and used his parts to restore Megatron, who now transforms into 2 vehicles! hahaha!

Soundwave seemed like the most dissapointing one. The bugger just kept floating in space from start till end.

And the one many of us looked forward to was the Combinator known as Devastator! 5 vehicles combined into 1 gigantic metal beast (there's a damn funny scene here)

It was made to move like a Gorilla. This toy version will be the most expensive one, rumours it'll cost around RM400+.

And the rest of the Transformers just adds the excitement to it all!

Of course Jetfire was cool! And if there wasn't enough "Cantum-cantum" into Devastator, there was another Cantum between Prime and Jetfire, which was so damn cool!

Certain critics claimed that the movie was just too much action, and it was too long (2 hours plus). However, that certain critics were a very tiny itsy-bitsy percent. In my opinion, the time in between all the actions include comedy, and of course linkages in the story. We can't just have fights non-stop! The comedy was Great! It just fitted in perfectly!

This will be the first movie since Star Wars Episode II & III where I will go see a couple more times at the cinema!

More so, with THX surround, why not! It is full of action after all, and the sounds of their transformation is music to my ears!

Definitely THE movie of the Summer, and for many Summers to come, till Transformers 3 comes out. Rumours are in year 2012, 3 years from now...

"Freedom is the Right of all Sentient Beings"

Friday the 13th 2009

I am a big fan of the Friday the 13th Series. Apart from the focus on the gruesome killings and similar plots in each episode (with exception to Jason X & Freddy vs Jason which was excellent!), one of the reasons I loved this was because of the Main character - Jason Voorhees.

Jason Voorhees in Freddy vs Jason

Of ALL the famous slasher movie Icons namely - Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers and Leatherface, none comes as Domineering, Strength wise, Commanding and outright Solid in the form of Jason Voorhees.

I won't go into details but now they've made a Re-make of the entire story and sort of modernised it a little and not to continue like: Friday the 13th Part xx and so on.

Here's the Poster & a few movie shots from the new movie Friday the 13th 2009:

he is famed for his Excellent killing styles as well as his Famous Hockey Mask and his ever loved Machete weapon.

The surprising thing is, I read today's Newspapers and apparently this movie will be released in Malaysia come April 9th!

Of course I am happy, yet I might most probably not go see it in cinemas. Once the movie passes the censorship committee, we won't be able to enjoy the movie in all its essence.

So, wait and buy the Un-censored version, Complete with all gore, killing etc. etc.

I can't wait!!!

"Jason Voorhees is BACK!!!"

My First Shots with my D300!!!

I now have 3 ways to share my photos:

i. First is through Flickr! where most of my shots will be posted
ii. In my Facebook account
iii. And at times, here in my Blog!

As I am very excited to be snapping away with my new baby, I'd like to share some photos of the initial shots taken with my new gear.

Body: Nikon D300 Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera
Lens: Nikkor 18-200mm VR F/3.5-5.6 G

Other than that I had a Hoya Lens filter, bought a SanDisk Extreme III Compact Flash 8GB memory card, and a Camera Bag.

I admit for a newbie into the world of DSLRs, I am being a bit ambitious by getting a D300 which is a Pro-sumer range where many Professionals are using one. In usual cases, most enthusiasts would start off with an Entree-Level DSLR, and in Nikon's range the entree levels are the D40 or the new D60. But I did some research and felt that I needed something that would last me a Considerably long time (3 years at least), and I know that if I were to get an entree-level one, though it is way much cheaper, I would regret as the functions would not be up to my expectations at some stage. After more research done, I finally made my decision and called up J-One @ Amcorp Mall to book my Camera. If you're interested in a Nikon camera, look no further, J-One's da best! Very experienced user of Nikon for decades! and the Prices there are much cheaper than Photography outlets in our Malls!

So, for my first shots I was lucky enough that the very next day, it was my Company's All Staff Meeting. So here we go:

This was a close up shot of our country's flag at my work desk. In terms of skills in getting the right colour, composition and focus, the reamining things that make a photo look great is "What the Photographer wants to shoot".

Imagine, even a simple shot of a garden can create an imaginary story way beyond one's imagination.

To be able to take photographs, one will be entering a new world of creativity, imagination, passion and poetry as we begin discovering the beauty of the world of Photography...

Having a dad and his 2 younger brothers who were into Photography since their young days, I never thought I, myself would end up in the same hobby. Even a couple of years ago, I never had even a slightest of interests in it. I guess it does run in the family!!!

Then I bought my first ever Camera, a Canon Powershot G9, which was a Prosumer level camera. It could fulfill the basic Point-and-Shoot functions as well as giving us some controls over a limited number of Manual Controls such as the ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperteur Levels. Other than that, it had a relatively good lense and the pictures produced were much better if we compared it to the Canon IXUS cameras. Images were sharper, better colour etc. Perhaps one of the G9's best features was its Macro shots! For a Camera in that level, they shoot Great Macro shots!!!

Then as I improved my composition, and begin to want to take certain pictures in certain angles etc, I realised things were limited on my G9. So I began researching online to find a Camera within a affordable budget which can last me many years and have functions that can really elaborate the Creativity, Imagination, Passion and Poetry in me!

After much online research, and asking friends, I have decided to get the Nikon D300 camera with a Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens to start off with! This is a real one heck of a camera! Fantastic Ergonomics, Excellent Picture Quality and the list goes on.

Last week during my high school friend's Wedding, his Photographer was using a Nikon D300 and I asked him about it. I told him I am going to buy one and currently own a G9. He immediately asked if I would like to sell my G9, but I said no, cause I would like to bring it along for easy shots / Macro close ups on the run which is easier. So I guess I will be carrying 2 cameras with me, especially when I travel.

Doesn't it just look beautiful?
Hahaha!!!

True enough, it is the Photographer who will determine if the picture is good, but with a good gear, more options will then be available...

Can't wait to get my hands on it and begin shooting!!!

Valentines Day 2009

5.00am! The alarm rang at my hotel room as I woke up, took my bath, packed and left the hotel in Penang for the Airport for my check in at 6am! Earliest flight for Firefly is 7am and may I say what a comfortable experience it was for my first Firefly experience.

Valentines comes yearly and this year I admit I had plagiarised my cousin's idea because it was a GOOD idea indeed! I booked the GSC Signature Valentines Package which included a 5-course dinner at one of the Restaurants at GSC @ The Gardens, a gift pack, a free picture and Gold Class tickets to a special premier of "Marley and Me".

Let me comment on the food first. It was ok. Perhaps not what I should expect seeing its a dinner at a cinema.

The gift pack was quite cool, some perfume sample and ONE free pass to a Premier movie. I won't be going alone, so paying for another ticket is alright.

Flowers! I'm surprised they didn't give any! At least one stock is better than nothin. Thankfully, I always trust my florist more than other 'possibilities'. So I had my florist bring in the bouquet into Mid Valley and surprise her! After every year, it gets HARDER to surprise your girl i tell you!!!

Apart from the package, it seemed like many of my friends chose Mid Valley/Gardens as their Valentine place this year, as I met up with quite many: David & Jin, Kenneth & Winnie, Eysa Zulkili! I haven't seen this guy in 10 years since we left school! And I met the famous fren of mine now who proposed in a hot air balloon, Mr Nigel Pong and his lovely fiance, who also took the same package at GSC Signature. What an evenin!
e
And finally, the best part was the Movie! Marley and Me is based on a true story and a Novel even came out. If you are a dog lover, or a Human, you would LOVE this movie! It tells the story of the world's worst dog! a Labrador Retriever whom a family had adopted since he was a puppy right until the saddest part of the movie. You go see it yourself. Prepare lotsa tissue. I admit!!! I Cried!!!

Hahaha! Anyway, a tiring but nice end to Valentines 2009.

Now, what the heck am I gonna do for Valentines 2010????

Damn...

Valentines Eve 2009 @ Gurney Drive, Penang Island

The Economic situation in 2009 is Sucking so bad tens of thousands of people are now without jobs. Business has slowed down, and in particular this month, the official 'love is in the air' month where the entire world celebrates Valentines Day! Headlines in the major newspapers state a drop in sales of Flowers and Chocolates, which are the 2 most famous gifts for Valentines. With the economic situation, how do we celebrate a Budget Valentines? Well, for one, you can celebrate it at Gurney Drive! n here's da story...

Have you ever celebrated Valentines Eve? Perhaps its quite common but not to me. So here I was in Penang Island, working. Helen & Herman drove up for the weekend for a short holiday and they stayed at G-Hotel. It was a Friday, 13th February 2009 and it was my last night in Penang as I have booked a damn early flight on Saturday, 14th at 7.00am!

Anyway, we arranged to meet up for dinner, and as I drove towards Gurney Drive where my hotel was (Evergreen), I could not believe my eyes! The traffic was so bad, i quickly turned the roundabout 360 degrees and headed to the back lane. Still NO parking. sigh, so i drove back to my hotel and walked from there to G Hotel. This is where I got the idea to share this with you all.

Apparently Valentine's Eve is also celebrated quite huge here @ Gurney Drive! As I walked the long length of it heading towards G Hotel, there were throngs of couples everywhere! And many girls selling Flowers, going for RM 10 per flower. As i strolled along more, their business was actually good! But there were a few guys who would not buy them even with the seller trying her best, and the guy's girlfriend is right next to him! Come on man, just ONE flower won't hurt...

I realise that it would be a haven for those who could not afford a lavish, elegant Valentines celebration. After all, the most important thing is that you are with her, no matter where, when or how. And with so many people selling flowers everywhere on this night, you don't even have to plan anything, nor do you have to book any place! Just head on over there and let it fall into place. The ONLY problem, of ALL problems, is finding a place to park!!! Can you believe that! hahaha.

So there I was so near G Hotel, and getting more jealous as every step I take, is another couple, so lovingly holding hands, so sweet and all, and there I was, walking alone. I think other than those selling flowers I was the only public person alone man!!! of course I'll be celebrating Valentines with my wife, but you can't help but to have this feeling at that time right.

So there you have it. If ever you wanna have a Budget Valentines, it need not be @ Gurney Drive, but if you wanna, you can always consider it. Take a short vacation and enjoy the great food in Penang, damn cheap DVDs but BEWARE when driving on the road, as the famous saying goes, "when in Rome, do as Romas do".

Last word: "Everyday should be a Valentines Day. Love your loved ones daily and not only on this one day, and happiness would be eternal. But since the world has a Valentines Day, wut the heck, just do something extra. haha!!!"

Happy Valentines to all!!!

Jee Onn
@ Starbucks Terminal 3 Subang
(I'm only here cuz there's NO other Wi-Fi spots available!)
